Bishops Lydeard Scarecrow Festival 2018

A small, dedicated group of villagers are looking to create the first ever Scarecrow Festival in Bishops Lydeard during a week in late September 2018.

Many other villages all over the country host such events, using them as fundraising opportunities to help support local concerns and some have been so successful that visitors from far a wide come to celebrate each year. Perhaps our village could do the same?

At present, after its first meeting, the small organising committee has proposed events such as a village-wide scarecrow making competition, with residents, businesses and community groups being urged to use their imagination to create entries of all shapes and sizes, filling the streets with colourful characters. The finished articles will be displayed in the gardens of properties, tied to walls, in shop windows with many found in unusual nooks and crannies etc.

The festival will have a theme, and competitors will be encouraged to be highly creative. The scarecrow displays will be part of a village trail (for both children and adults) and people will be able to visit each entry in turn, voting for the best one whilst also picking up clues along the trail, with a prize for those who have completed the puzzle.

There are also tentative plans to have some form of ticketed evening entertainment at the village hall, consisting of a scarecrow themed fancy-dress dance, possibly with local musical talent, plus food and drink.

Other villages have also incorporated a day-long celebration at the end of the week consisting of craft and food stalls, live music, entertainment for families, a themed thanksgiving church service with musical accompaniment from local professional ensembles, and carnival processions with marching bands.

Obviously, this takes a huge amount of effort and organisation, both behind the scenes and during the week/weekend of the festival. Many villages have come together to make their events successful, raising large sums of money for worthwhile causes both local and national, and had great fun in the process.

We would very much like Bishops Lydeard to be one of those places, and call upon any willing volunteers to join our organising committee, helping to come up with ideas for taking this forward for 2018. Let’s put Bishops Lydeard on the Scarecrow map (or even the yellow brick road to Taunton and Minehead!)

If you’d like to help or get in touch, then please either come to our next planning meeting at 7 pm on 12th September 2017 at The Lethbridge, Bishops Lydeard, join our group, follow or message us on Facebook/Twitter (search for Bishops Lydeard Scarecrow Festival).
