July Club Outing: Torquay & Brixham

July saw us off to Torquay or Brixham; about half went to each place, I believe. The traffic around Torbay was quite bad but we eventually got there - it was equally bad going home again, so we were 30 minutes late picking up the group at Torquay! Fortunately, the weather was warm and mostly dry, albeit a touch blowy!

Torquay stayed warm and dry. I'm told nobody went up on the big wheel for a view over the bay! I'm also told that many good lunches were enjoyed! Many saw the crew of the submarine, HMS Torbay, parade through the town (with military band) in the afternoon - they were handing back the Honorary Freedom of the Borough of Torbay as the submarine is being decommissioned.

Brixham, as many will know, is an active fishing village, with a large marina. Most of us stayed around the village wandering the shops, cafés (yes, I'm sure cake was consumed, probably fish and chips too!) and around the marina and breakwater - it was quite windy around the latter! I was fortunate to discover the museum, which is well worth a visit. It has something on the history of every part of life in the village, from the prehistoric findings in nearby limestone caves, through to the landing of William of Orange, the war years and Belgium immigrants, the fishing, lifeboats, education, and general living in a village - the most diverse museum I have ever visited.

Two people took the walk up to the National Park at Berryhead to see the wonderful wild flowers, and a delightful cafe. Quite a walk up there but well worth it for the stunning views. They also found a group using technology to map the tunnels dating from the Napoleonic wars!

Our final trip for this year is on 20th September to Dorchester and Weymouth. This is open to non-members, so contact myself or Mary if you are interested in joining us for a good day out.

On 18th October, we are back in the Village Hall at 2 pm with our first speaker of the winter season. Our monthly 'First Wednesday' in the month social lunches in the Lethbridge Arms are continuing. Contact me for details: 01823 433266
