Proposed World War 1 Memorial

Submission to the Parish Council for permission to place the proposed World War 1 Memorial, Poppies in a Breeze in the Remembrance/Memorial Garden, adjacent to Bishops Lydeard Church School.

Background

Fiveways magazine, run by a small group of volunteers, publishes and distributes copies of the magazine to all five villages of the Benefice of Bishops Lydeard. Each year, the group donates sums of money to charitable causes within the Benefice area. Two years ago, it was decided by the committee of Fiveways magazine to put this money aside to pay for a permanent memorial to mark the anniversary of the end of World War 1 in 2018.

The Memorial

It was felt that this should be from the whole community and suggestions were sought from people in the village. The committee was taken with Ben Horrobin’s idea of a sculpture called, Poppies in a Breeze. It was felt that this would be an appropriate memorial with the poppy being the symbol of remembrance.

Location of the Memorial

Following further discussions with representatives of the village, it was agreed that this memorial would be best placed within the Memorial Garden. If this was not possible then another location would have to be found. The committee felt that to place this within St. Mary’s church or churchyard would not, in this instance, be appropriate as they would like this to come from the whole village and not just the Church.

The Seating

In our discussions, we learned that the Parish Council had recently placed a stone memorial seat at the far end of the area. The committee thought that this feature could be enhanced with similar seating being incorporated into the poppy memorial.

The Submission

The committee would like to place before the Parish Council the proposal that the World War 1 Memorial titled, Poppies in a Breeze and two stone benches, as detailed in the attached drawings, should be placed within the Memorial Garden, adjacent to the school. It is hoped that the Memorial can be unveiled and dedicated at the Remembrance Day service on Sunday 11th November 2018.
